The YouTube feature that was being redesigned dealt with how videos would stay in high definition instead of switching back to 480p after switching from video to video. The redesign added the clickable option to keep videos in 720p or 1080p after initially switching it to one of them. The user's mental model with respect to the redesign is that they think that the programmers are critiquing the feature for the benefit in accessibility for the users.
The mental model can be completely the opposite of the implementation model. Mental models are what people think is happening or what should be happening. The implementation model does not have to pertain to the users and their opinion because it is about only pleasing the programmers themselves. Implementation model ideas and mental model ideas can clash and in turn can cause a lot of angry users.
