4 - Helana Hernandez

While one of a designers greatest tools is testing users, this doesn't mean that the user is necessarily always right. Only testing certain personas can lead to a narrow minded design."Designing with a narrow set of persona descriptions in mind could actually prevent you from achieving the result you’re after by alienating audiences not part of the persona pool." (pp. 41) While keeping in mind what those certain users want we also must not forget the many other users out there. Just because a few users may think one way is best, that doesn't mean that is the greatest design for the majority. As explained by Hoekman, not only should we use personas when thinking about design but also specific scenarios for those personas. How would a certain persona act in a certain scenario with that design? Another idea to keep in mind in that humans adapt.  While we should keep in mind what the user wants it is also important to realize that users can also adjust to designs. This relates to project #2 in that while we edited the design based on the user. Thinking about that user in a certain scenario yields the greatest changes in design, according to Hoekman. Our behaviors are often times motivated heavily by the situation. Keeping situation in mind is always needed for creating the best designs.
