As far as online help and tutorials go, I would say that they are completely beneficial. When designing the "obvious" it still will not work for every single person. Everyone thinks different, and if 90 out of 100 people understand something the first time then that's great. I think that the help is just a step further and not to compensate for the lack of good design. Also, the online help has to work or there would not be so much online help. Obviously some people somewhere are out there using it, or people would not invest resources into it.
For project 5 we talked about a few different types of people to market toward. There is the hardcore fan. This person would be connected to the superhero personally and have much knowledge of what he/she is as a hero. There also is the opposite, someone who has no knowledge of the superhero. This person might be just seeing "the movie" because it looked cool, or a friend suggested it. Lastly, there is the person in between. Maybe they have heard of the hero, or seen them in video games. They do not feel attached to the hero but may like them a little.
I agree with you that HELP system is completely beneficial no matter how good or "obvious" the design is. Because there still people don;t know how to use this application. So form my perspective, HELP system is a responsibility from designer to potential consumers.
